The Story Behind Concon
Meet Emu Lapis: The Story Behind the VTuber
Before Lapis was a VTuber model, she was an original character living in old artwork, rhythm game ideas, and years of creative experiments.
If you've followed my streams, convention appearances, or artwork over the years, you've probably seen Lapis.
With her blue color palette and energetic personality, she's become a huge part of my creative identity. But what many people don't realize is that Lapis didn't start as a VTuber at all.
Her story actually begins years before I ever started streaming.
The Beginning: An Original Character
Long before VTubing became popular, I enjoyed creating original characters.
One of the earliest versions of what would eventually become Lapis can be traced back to artwork I created in 2016. At the time, she was simply an original character I enjoyed drawing. Like many artists, I had plenty of character ideas, but I never really knew what to do with them beyond illustrations.
She existed mostly within my sketchbooks, artwork, and imagination.
I enjoyed drawing her, but I never expected her to become such a significant part of my life.
My Rhythm Game Roots
A few years later, in 2018, I created another original character design for a Pump It Up art contest.
While the contest itself didn't lead anywhere significant, the experience reinforced something I already knew: I enjoyed creating original characters just as much as fan art.
The idea of having a character that represented me continued to stick around in the back of my mind.
I just hadn't found the right way to bring that character to life yet.
Discovering VTubing
Then 2020 happened.
Like many people, the COVID era changed a lot of my routines. Conventions disappeared, events were canceled, and many of the ways I normally connected with people simply weren't available anymore.
Around that time, VTubing was rapidly growing.
For me, it felt like the perfect opportunity.
I already had an original character. I already enjoyed creating content and interacting with communities. Instead of letting my character remain as a drawing, I could finally bring her to life.
That's when Lapis truly began her journey.
That shift changed what the character meant to me.
Lapis was no longer only an illustration. She could move, speak, react, stream, and become part of a community in real time.
Why the Name Lapis?
The name Lapis comes from lapis lazuli, the deep blue gemstone.
I've always loved the rich blue color associated with the stone, and it became a major inspiration for the character's visual identity.
The blue hair, the overall color palette, and much of her aesthetic were inspired by that connection.
When I first began VTubing, I adopted the name Emu Lapis, combining my existing identity with the character I had created.
For the first time, the character felt real.
She could speak, move, interact with viewers, and become something more than just artwork on a page.
Becoming Emucchi
Like many creators, my VTubing journey wasn't always smooth.
Streaming can be difficult. Growth can be slow. Sometimes it feels like you're putting in endless hours without seeing much progress.
By 2023, I found myself feeling discouraged about streaming and content creation.
Around that time, I decided to shift toward something that felt closer to my real-life personality. Rather than focusing entirely on the VTuber identity, I started using the name Emucchi.
The change allowed me to feel more authentic and comfortable as a creator while still keeping the parts of the character I loved.
Returning to Lapis
Even though my online handle remained Emucchi, I never stopped caring about Lapis.
Over time, I found my motivation again and returned to streaming.
And when I came back, I realized something important.
Lapis wasn't just a VTuber model.
She was a character I had been developing for years.
She represented countless hours of artwork, creativity, experimentation, and personal growth. She had evolved alongside me through different stages of my life and creative career.
Today, I still stream as Emucchi, but I continue to refer to my VTuber as Lapis.
The two identities have become connected while still remaining their own unique things.
Lapis in My Art Today
Because Lapis has been with me for so long, she naturally became part of my art and merch too. I love being able to take the character from old sketches and live streams into physical pieces people can collect, wear, and display.
If you want to see how Lapis looks now, these are a few pieces from the current Emu Lapis collection.

When I look at Lapis today, it's hard to believe how far she's come from those early character designs.
What started as an original character eventually became a VTuber, a creative outlet, and a way for me to connect with people around the world.
She's been through redesigns, new ideas, and different chapters of my life, but the core concept has always remained the same.
Lapis represents creativity, passion, and the desire to bring something imagined into reality.
To this day, I still love my VTuber model.
I still enjoy streaming.
And I still want to share Lapis with as many people as possible.
After all, she spent years waiting to come to life.
Now that she's here, I want the world to meet her.
